Behind the Museum Cases
Students tour the exhibits in the history museum and learn first hand about our communities' material culture. Artifacts not normally on display are used to acquaint students with every day objects from various periods in history, allowing them to make instant connections with the daily lives of the people of the past. Students also learn proper care and maintenance of objects which they can use to make sure the items in their own collections are safe for the next century.
Utilizing the Museum Archives extensive photo and newspaper collection, students learn to analyze primary and secondary source documents. This valuable skill is at the core of historical research and encourages critical thinking skills.
This program takes about an hour and is an excellent companion to a class trip to Jonesborough.
