Tennessee’s First Frontier
Teaching American History Project
The Teaching American History Project provides teachers with a unique opportunity to engage with history professors, fellow teachers, and members of the local history community to enhance their teaching of American History. The emphasis of the project is on examining the historical events that happened locally in order to tie these more effectively with the major currents of American History. The Teaching American History Project offers week-long Summer Institutes, Mini-Institutes, and other professional development opportunities.
Since 2001 the U.S. Department of Education has funded a limited number of projects throughout the nation to improve the quality of American History education in the public schools. Our local project, initially funded in 2005, involves teachers from 13 school districts in Northeast Tennessee in Tennessee’s First Frontier Consortium.
