Girl Scouts will experience history at Oak Hill School, which was a one room schoolhouse from 1886-1952. Girls will travel back to a school day in 1892. Lessons include arithmetic, spelling, and penmanship with quill pen writing. Girls will take their copy books home with them. Materials used inside the school are just as they would have been in 1892, including slate boards instead of paper and pencil. The day includes a chance to play with historic games and toys on the school’s lawn, including cup and ball, the buzzsaw, and the game of Graces. There will be a break for lunch in the middle of the day, and girls are welcome to bring a picnic lunch with them and eat on the school’s lawn. Girls are welcome to dress up for the time period of the late 1800s. The best reference is Laura Ingalls Wilder’s Little House on the Prairie series. Lessons will be tailored to meet the grade levels of the girls in attendance. The Oak Hill School Heritage Education Program is now in its 20th year. Payment can be made by check, cash, or card. Registration fees cannot be refunded after the registration end date. We cannot refund card payments, but we can refund check and cash.

To register, contact the Heritage Alliance at 423-753-9580, or email us at amason@heritageall.org. Fee per Girl Scout is $5.00. There is no charge for leaders and chaperones.
