Register Now for the 2011 East Tennessee Preservation Conference

The Heritage Alliance of Northeast Tennessee and Southwest Virginia, Knox Heritage, and the East Tennessee Preservation Alliance are proudly hosting the 2011 East Tennessee Preservation Conference in Jonesborough.  This year’s theme, “Positioning Preservation for Prosperity: Conservation and Preservation in the New Economy” will focus on the emerging economy and how our cultural and natural assets are critical for East Tennessee’s economic development.

Dr. Carroll Van West, Director of MTSU’s Center for Historic Preservation and one of the industry leaders, will kick off the conference by sharing the challenges and opportunities of heritage conservation in East Tennessee.  West does a masterful job of weaving authentic history of place with relevant trends in heritage tourism and local economies.

A panel session, moderated by Tennessee Main Street Director, Kimberly Nyberg, will share insight showing the unique opportunities for small towns to incubate creative economies by using historic preservation and the arts.  On Friday afternoon, a panel will share the ins and outs of Jonesborough’s revitalization story.  Following the session, attendees will be treated to tours of the town.

Other speakers include Gary Sexton, who leads the Scott High School Museum Project.  The Museum Project is thought to be the only program of its kind in the nation that teaches high school students how to build, interpret, and operate a living history museum.  Amy Potts, with Preservation Kentucky, will share insight on rural landscapes and partnering with students, community leaders, and volunteers.

Mary Ruffin Hanbury will close the conference on Saturday at lunch by talking about the economy’s impact on cultural resources and how communities can preserve resources while proving a sense of place and a high quality of life.  After all, an attractive quality of life has proven to be one of the most important factors when businesses are selecting communities.  Plus, the residents benefit.

This year’s conference weekend will also feature the inaugural announcement of the Heritage Alliance’s list of endangered places in Northeast Tennessee and Southwest Virginia.  Also, East Tennessee Preservation Alliance will present their annual awards to be announced on Friday, November 11.  Awards will recognize outstanding achievements for individuals’ and groups’ work on restoration, adaptive use, new infill design, rehabilitation projects and lifetime achievement in preservation advocacy in the region.

The full conference registration is $40.00 that includes all sessions, guided tours of Jonesborough, lunches on Friday and Saturday, continental breakfast on Friday and Saturday, the Awards Reception, and much more.  There is also a $30.00 student rate available.  Visit www.historicjonesborough.com for lodging information.

The conference brochure is available for download here.  Please print and mail the registration form no later than November 4!

Preservation field services provided by Knox Heritage and the Heritage Alliance are assisted by a Partners in the Field challenge grant from the National Trust for Historic Preservation.  For more information, visit www.preservationnation.org.

Doors Open! 2011 to Open 12 Sites to the Public for Free

Now in its 5th year, Doors Open! will be an exciting beginning to a month of programs and events dedicated to the successes and challenges facing historic preservation efforts throughout the region.  Doors Open! 2011 will be held on Saturday, May 7 from 10 am-4 p.m, and allows the Heritage Alliance a wonderful opportunity to partner with our colleagues at local museums and historic sites to celebrate the wide and diverse perspectives of our regional history.

From the pre-historic tales of the Gray Fossil Site to a working 19th century farm at the Exchange Place, Doors Open! offers something for everyone in the family to enjoy in this year’s tour.  And for those looking to take home a piece of history for themselves, the Heritage Alliance Architectural Salvage Warehouse will be open for the duration of the Doors Open event!

This year’s event will focus on twelve sites spread throughout the region, in an effort to encourage participants to visit multiple sites throughout the day.  Many sites are offering special experiences as a part of their Doors Open!  programming, including  “Spring Time in Haynesville” at Tipton-Haynes State Historic Site, guided architectural walking tours of the Tusculum College campus in Greeneville, and a special open house at the Knob Creek Museum, which is part of a Tennessee Century Farm.

Our region’s educational past will also be explored during this year’s tour as two former schools are opened to the public.  The Nathanael Green Museum in Greeneville, which formerly housed Greeneville High School in the mid twentieth century, tells the story of the founding of Greeneville and contains extensive exhibitry on the life of President Andrew Johnson.  Oak Hill School in Jonesborough, a century older than its Greeneville counterpart, will also be opened on May 7 to showcase the wonderful restoration of the one room school and to learn more about the Heritage Alliance’s award winning heritage education program for students.

This year’s Doors Open! will also allow visitors to experience three regional award winning historic properties.  The Old Deery Inn in Blountville, The Netherland Inn in Kingsport, and the Lofts at Cornerstone/Benjamin Walls Gallery in Bristol were all recognized as outstanding preservation successes at the 2010 Regional Preservation Awards.  Make sure to ask the volunteers and staff about their efforts to preserve and restore these wonderful buildings as you explore the sites!

And don’t miss an opportunity to stroll the grounds of one of our region’s most cherished historic landscapes while you visit the Museum at Mountain Home.  The museum is housed on the grounds of the Veteran’s Affairs campus in Johnson City, which is currently under review for designation as a National Historic Landmark by the National Park Service.  This wonderful museum highlights the campus’s role as a working medical complex for veterans throughout the late 19th and twentieth centuries.

This year’s Doors Open!  is shaping up to be our best yet, so don’t miss your opportunity to experience these wonderful sites as we kick off National Preservation Month!

Open House at the Salvage Warehouse on Saturday, May 7

Been holding onto that list of house related maintenance projects this winter in anticipation of warmer weather?  Does your “honey-do” wish list include working on that outdoor patio or with your house’s historic wooden windows?  Let the Architectural Salvage Warehouse help you get to work on that list and provide you with the items you need to get started!  We’ll be opening the warehouse from 10am-4pm on Saturday, May 7 to show off our newest additions and raise money to benefit our preservation programming.

The warehouse is stocked with all sorts of architectural gems, including doors, windows, and a large stock of salvaged brick!  Need to match a piece of flooring or trim for a repair job?  Bring a photo or a sample of the item in question with you, and our staff and volunteers will help you match it at a lower cost than having it recreated or purchasing it at a home improvement center.  Been looking for an interesting conversation piece for your living room?  Come stroll through the warehouse in search of that perfect inspiration to create your own piece of art or furniture!  Our staff is always willing to help you think of new and interesting ways to use salvaged items.

Parking for the open house will be available at the Washington County Highway Department on Depot Street.  The Heritage Alliance accepts payments of cash and check for purchased salvaged items, and is unable to hold items for more than 5 days after the date of purchase.  For more information, please contact Justin Sanders at 423.753.9580.
