Rural Heritage Exhibition on Display at JWC History Museum
Though farming in the Southern Appalachians declined during the Civil War, it remained the principal source of livelihood until after 1880.
The Jonesborough/Washington County History Museum is currently featuring an exhibition of archival photographs and artifacts related to the rural heritage of Washington County. Themes include “Making A living from the Land” and “Man and Beast.”
In Jonesborough and Surrounding Washington County, the advent of the 1880’s brought a building boom and the substantial growth of the tourism industry throughout the region. Both economies were predicated on the land and its gifts.
Artifacts include several farming implements and a barrel washing machine from the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The exhibit is free and open to the public during all Historic Jonesborough Visitor’s Center hour of operation. Donations are encouraged and used to fund all on-going conservation and exhibit projects.
