Preservation Education
The Heritage Alliance is dedicated to helping to build a culture of preservation in our region through unique and effective educational initiatives geared at all age groups. Preservation Education is provided through a variety of different programs and resources, all with the common goal of increasing the availability of preservation skills, techniques, and history to the general public.
Preservation Research Library
Headquartered at the Heritage Alliance office in Jonesborough, the Preservation Library contains over 200 volumes relating to preservation and historic structures. Specific topics range from technical restoration methods to architectural styles and preservation philosophy to interpreting historic sites. In addition, we have collected trade journals such as the APT Bulletin, Preservation Magazine, published by the National Trust for Historic Preservation, and Clem Labine's Traditional Building. Some of these collections date to the late 1970s. Additionally, our library includes a collection of manufacturers' promotional information for products ranging from mini-duct forced air ventilation systems to epoxies and repair mortars. Please check the website in the future for a complete list of specific titles and collections.
Governor's School for the Scientific Exploration of Tennessee Heritage
Each summer, the Heritage Alliance in cooperation with East Tennessee State University's Center for Appalachian Studies and Services host some of Tennessee's most gifted high school students for an in-depth exploration of Historic Preservation and its role in the story of Tennessee history. Students spend extensive time in Jonesborough, learning the history of Tennessee's oldest town, and its role as a beacon in the preservation movement. Students gain hands on experience with a variety of preservation issues in the town, including work in the Historic Jonesborough Cemetery. Students also gain valuable knowledge about the impact that preservation has on local economies and on tourism efforts as well.
Various Educational Workshops/Guest Lecturers/Tours
Our organization also works to bring to our region those who are most knowledgeable and experienced in a variety of issues relating to preservation. Past workshops have brought members of the community
together to learn the techniques necessary to repair historic masonry through tuck-pointing. Other technical skills, including the repair of historic wooden windows, occur throughout the year. Please check our online calendar for upcoming workshop dates and topics.
The Heritage Alliance also hosts a variety of tours on many different issues related to preservation. Town tours highlight the history of the preservation movement in Jonesborough, as well as the economic benefits to a preserved downtown. Our preservationist also hosts tours of local residences and structures to showcase the architectural styles found in our region. These tours can be set up through the Heritage Alliance by calling 423-753-9580.
