SUMMARY:Cast Iron Clinic
DESCRIPTION:A collaboration between The Heritage Alliance of Northeast Tennessee and Create Appalachia\, this workshop features Katie Hoffman and Brett Tiller of Vintage Kitchen Cast Iron and Collectibles. Vintage Kitchen buys\, sells\, trades\, and restores cast iron professionally. Katie and Brett will lead a discussion about selecting the right pans for your kitchen and show you how to clean and maintain your collection—old or new. They’ll bring their portable cast iron “museum” and share a bit about cast iron history.\n\nDo you have a family heirloom or flea market find that needs a little cleanup? Bring it along and they may be able to tell you something about its age and origins\, as well as whether it needs restoration. (And if you want them to do the job\, they’ll give you an estimate!).\nWhether you’ve inherited your grandmother’s cast iron or purchased a brand-new piece\, it’s likely that you have some questions about cooking in and caring for your cast iron. Here are a few of the most common questions we’ll answer:\n● Is it true that I shouldn’t use soap on my cast iron pans?\n● Can I actually use cast iron on a glass-top stove?\n● I have my grandmother’s heirloom skillet\, but it’s rusty and crusty. How do I restore it?\n● How do I choose the best cast iron for my own cooking style?\n● If my pan is really grungy\, I can just throw it in the grill or into a fire and clean it up\, right? (PLEASE DON’T! Come to our presentation to find out why.)\n\nBring your questions—and any pieces of cast iron that you might have questions about—to the workshop. If you’re thinking about purchasing a piece\, we’ll have a few items for sale. Ladles and Linens has a great selection. Don’t miss this chance to find out what you want to know! Everyone welcome\, from beginners to collectors.\n\nTickets for this workshop are $10.00 and are available at jonesborough.com/tickets or by calling the Visitors Center at 423-753-9580. There are 40 spots available.\n\n\n\nThe Taste of Tennessee promises good times\, good company\, and good eats. Don’t miss this exciting opportunity to learn more about our local food heritage from September 17th – September 24th. Bring your appetite for Appalachia!\n\nThe Heritage Alliance is dedicated to the preservation of the architectural\, historical\, and cultural heritage of our region and to providing educational experiences related to history and heritage for a wide range of audiences. For more information\, please call our office at 423.753.9580\, or contact the organization via email at info@heritageall.org. Further information can also be found online at http://www.heritageall.org/.\n\nCreate Appalachia strives to make our region a better place to live and work by supporting innovation and entrepreneurship centered around the arts and creativity. We work to sustain an environment that will generate new businesses\, provide jobs in arts-based businesses\, and highlight the important role that creativity plays in the region’s economic vitality.\n\n\n

SUMMARY:Basic Fermenting: Sauerkraut Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Please join the Heritage Alliance and Create Appalachia for a workshop on basic fermenting. No experience necessary!\n\nKatie Hoffman\, Executive Director of Create Appalachia and Appalachian foodways scholar\, will lead this hands-on session. You’ll make a small batch of sauerkraut and Katie will share tips for fermenting other veggies\, too. If you grow a garden\, you’ll go home with some great ideas about how to preserve the vegetables you grow by fermenting them. You’ll leave with a small batch of kraut to tend\, plus handouts that give you pretty much all the info you’ll need to ferment your own sauerkraut at home.\n\nKatie will demonstrate first\, then turn you loose to create a batch of your very own fermented goodness! We’ll supply the ingredients—you bring a sharp knife that’s large enough to cut a head of cabbage and a large cutting board. Also\, please bring your own vessel. This can be a wide mouth half-gallon mason jar or a half-gallon stoneware crock. Don’t have a Mason jar? No problem! Bring something glass that’s cylindrical in shape\, with a wide enough mouth that you can reach in to work on the kraut as it ferments.\n\nBecause she can’t help herself\, Katie will probably also share with you some interesting stories about sauerkraut and how it fits into Appalachian history and culture. She’ll answer questions and also share tips and tricks\, as well as ideas for using other veggies besides cabbage. Think beets\, corn\, radishes\, snow peas\, cucumbers\, and green beans. The possibilities are endless!\n\nTickets for this workshop are only $20.00. With only 28 spots available\, make sure you book your space early. Tickets must be purchased in advance. This workshop will take place in a pavilion in Persimmon Ridge Park in Jonesborough. It will be held rain or shine.\n\nTickets can be purchased at jonesborough.com/tickets or by calling the Visitors Center at 423-753-1010.\nWe are proud to present this hands-on workshop as a collaboration between the Heritage Alliance of Northeast Tennessee and Southwest Virginia and Create Appalachia as a part of the 2023 Taste of Tennessee Appalachian food festival.\n\n\n\nCreate Appalachia’s Create-A-Stir Series focuses on the art of food and showcases the creativity and innovation involved in Appalachian foods\, past and present. Create Appalachia strives to make our region a better place to live and work by supporting innovation and entrepreneurship centered around the arts and creativity. We work to sustain an environment that will generate new businesses\, provide jobs in arts-based businesses\, and highlight the important role that creativity plays in the region’s economic vitality.\n\nThe Taste of Tennessee is partially funded through an Arts Project Support Grant from the Tennessee Arts Commission. SUMMARY:Taste of Tennessee Appalachian Foodways Festival
DESCRIPTION:“All things edible\, all things Appalachian!” That is the motto of this year’s “Taste of Tennessee” festival\, taking place on Saturday\, June 18th in downtown Jonesborough. Taste of Tennessee is a day-long celebration of Appalachian food and foodways\, highlighting the history and culture surrounding the region’s cuisine. \n  \nYou may remember hearing about Taste of Tennessee in years prior\, although the COVID-19 pandemic forced the event into an entirely online format in August 2020 and a cancellation in September 2021. Despite those necessary changes\, approximately 4\,000 people attended the first event online\, participating in special programs like cooking classes\, historical demonstrations\, farm tours\, and more. \n  \nThis year\, The Heritage Alliance of Northeast Tennessee and Southwest Virginia is pleased to announce that the event will take place live and in-person\, with a similar dynamic and exciting program of activities. The festival will include live musical performances\, food\, special guest presentations\, vendors\, and contests. One of festival’s central features is a cake-baking competition for homecooks\, professionals\, and children\, where local residents are encouraged to show off their skills\, as well as their favorite dishes. A public tasting of the entries will be offered. Listening tickets for the lecture series\, starring some stellar panelists and demonstrators\, are available for purchase online at heritageall.org. \n  \nExecutive Director Anne G’Fellers-Mason and Programming Coordinator Megan Cullen Tewell hope that the event will bring people together to explore and celebrate Appalachian cuisine. This festival will take place from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM and is completely family friendly. In addition to highlighting the work of local chefs\, farmers\, historians\, and food experts\, this day-long celebration also serves as a fundraiser for The Heritage Alliance and will benefit local hunger-fighting initiatives. \n  \nDescribing the event in years past\, Tewell explained that: “Our goal is to get people excited about Appalachian cuisine\, past and present. That’s our main objective with this event— to connect people to food and to each other.” The Heritage Alliance has partnered with numerous local entities\, including to highlight Appalachian foodways in a variety of contexts. \n  \nA complete program for Taste of Tennessee will be released shortly. Confirmed speakers include prominent chefs\, “foodies\,” farmers\, historians\, interpreters\, to name a few. And vendors will have artisanal goods available for purchase\, alongside food trucks offering local fare. Featuring historic recipes\, techniques\, and ingredients\, as well as modern spins on Appalachian classics\, Mason and Tewell hope that Taste of Tennessee helps the public to come together and enjoy a sense of community\, preferably one smothered in butter. \nTaste of Tennessee promises good times\, good company\, and good eats. Don’t miss this exciting opportunity to learn more about our local food heritage on June 18th—and bring your appetite for Appalachia! SUMMARY:Taste of Tennessee: Virtual Appalachian Food Celebration
DESCRIPTION:What’s cooking at the Heritage Alliance of Northeast Tennessee and Southwest Virginia? The organization is serving local residents a new event that highlights the history and culture of Appalachian foodways. “Taste of Tennessee” is a new virtual program that promises to bring people together to explore and celebrate Appalachian cuisine from the comfort of their homes. Given the current COVID-19 pandemic\, the event is completely online and is scheduled for Saturday\, August 22nd from 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM. This day-long digital celebration is full of education and entertainment\, and also serves as a fundraiser for The Heritage Alliance. As part of the event\, The Heritage Alliance will present a variety of offerings via Facebook and Zoom\, including lectures\, demonstrations\, cooking classes\, and more. \n“When we first conceived of the idea of Taste of Tennessee\, it was envisioned as an in-person Appalachian food fair\,” says Executive Director Anne Mason. “Unfortunately\, COVID-19 has forced us to re-conceptualize the event\, but we still wanted to keep the intended spirit of the event alive.” \n“Our goal is to get people excited about Appalachian cuisine\, past and present\,” adds Programming Coordinator Megan Tewell. “That’s our main objective with this event—to connect people to food and to each other.” \nA complete program for “Taste of Tennessee” will be released shortly\, although confirmed speakers include prominent chefs\, “foodies\,” farmers\, historians\, interpreters\, to name a few. Tickets for special Zoom events are available on the Town of Jonesborough’s website. Featuring historic recipes\, techniques\, and ingredients\, as well as modern spins on Appalachian classics\, the Heritage Alliance hopes that “Taste of Tennessee” helps the public to come together around a virtual “table” and enjoy a sense of community once more. \nThe Heritage Alliance is also continuing to collect recipes for their community-curated cookbook\, as part of “Taste of Tennessee.” Do you have a favorite recipe that you would like to contribute? Please contact programming coordinator Megan Cullen Tewell at mtewell@heritageall.org in order to share. And don’t miss this exciting opportunity to learn more about our local food heritage on August 22nd— bring your appetite for Appalachia!
