This is the perfect way to kick off the spooky Halloween season. \nThe festivities will take place on Saturday\, September 30th at 7:00 pm at the McKinney Center with general history-based trivia questions\, friendly competition\, a costume contest\, and a ton of fun! Not a “history buff?” Don’t worry! These questions cover a wide range of topics and categories and include something for everyone. DESCRIPTION:Are you a master of the cake pan? A dessert-making superstar? A PTA bake sale legend? Do you have the most delicious family cake recipe of all time?\n\nShow off your skills at this year’s “Take the Cake” competition at the Taste of Tennessee festival. A panel of judges will select winners for each division based on presentation\, originality/creativity\, taste\, and technique. All cakes need to be homemade\, and participants must supply a copy of the recipe.\nTraditional (as well as vegan and/or gluten-free) dishes are welcome. After the contest\, the public will be able to purchase samples of the entries by donating food to the JAMA food pantry. SUMMARY:History Happy Hour
DESCRIPTION:Join the Chester Inn State Historic Site and Museum on September 21st at 6:30 pm as we welcome Joshua Dacey\, Site Manager at the Chester Inn Museum for this month’s History Happy Hour! \nAt the conclusion of the Civil War officials at the state and local levels in many of the former Confederate states vigorously fought to keep a racial caste system in place. This early Jim Crow period saw the enactment of laws and “Black Codes” specifically targeted at formerly enslaved individuals. For generations\, skilled and unskilled enslaved men\, women\, and children were “hired out” to perform menial labor that their enslavers financially profited from. In a new system of convict labor leasing that developed after the Civil War\, state and county governments likewise profited by using their prison populations to labor on commercial or private projects such as road construction\, railway maintenance\, logging\, or mining.  What allowed them to do so was a loophole in the 13th Amendment that stipulates “involuntary servitude” will only be used as “punishment for a crime.” Beginning in 1866 and continuing until 1886\, Tennessee quickly became one of the first states to implement convict labor leasing. Evidence also indicates that a system of convict labor leasing was utilized in Jonesborough as early as 1822. Mr. Dacey will be talking about all this and more. The program is entitled “I’m free from the chain gang now:” Building the Railroads of the South and Convict Labor Leasing. It will begin at 6:30 pm in the International Storytelling Festival. The program is free and open to the public! \nThe 2023 season of History Happy Hour will run from April through November with a new program every third Thursday of the month. DESCRIPTION:A collaboration between The Heritage Alliance of Northeast Tennessee and Create Appalachia\, this workshop features Katie Hoffman and Brett Tiller of Vintage Kitchen Cast Iron and Collectibles. Vintage Kitchen buys\, sells\, trades\, and restores cast iron professionally. Katie and Brett will lead a discussion about selecting the right pans for your kitchen and show you how to clean and maintain your collection—old or new. They’ll bring their portable cast iron “museum” and share a bit about cast iron history.\n\nDo you have a family heirloom or flea market find that needs a little cleanup? Bring it along and they may be able to tell you something about its age and origins\, as well as whether it needs restoration. (And if you want them to do the job\, they’ll give you an estimate!).\nWhether you’ve inherited your grandmother’s cast iron or purchased a brand-new piece\, it’s likely that you have some questions about cooking in and caring for your cast iron. Here are a few of the most common questions we’ll answer:\n● Is it true that I shouldn’t use soap on my cast iron pans?\n● Can I actually use cast iron on a glass-top stove?\n● I have my grandmother’s heirloom skillet\, but it’s rusty and crusty. How do I restore it?\n● How do I choose the best cast iron for my own cooking style?\n● If my pan is really grungy\, I can just throw it in the grill or into a fire and clean it up\, right? DESCRIPTION:As a part of the Taste of Tennessee Festival\, the Heritage Alliance is excited to partner with the Exchange Place in Kingsport to offer an open-hearth cooking class on September 21st. We will have a class that day at 10:00 am. Students must be 10 years of age or older to participate in this class. Space is limited to 15 students. Parents may have to wait outside or take turns watching the instruction. Instructor Heather Gilreath will lead students through the process. Payment of $12.00 is required upon registration. All supplies are included. The Exchange Place is located at 4812 Orebank Rd\, Kingsport\, TN 37664.  \nPerhaps no food is more associated with early America than the humble hoecake. This historic “fast food” fed both rich and poor\, enslaved and elite.  Join us for an interactive and engaging presentation at Exchange Place Historic Site to learn more about hoecakes and other fare of the antebellum Mountain South.  In the reconstructed log kitchen\, you will see first-hand how food was prepared over an open fire in the days before electricity and indoor plumbing. If you grow a garden\, you’ll go home with some great ideas about how to preserve the vegetables you grow by fermenting them. You’ll leave with a small batch of kraut to tend\, plus handouts that give you pretty much all the info you’ll need to ferment your own sauerkraut at home.\n\nKatie will demonstrate first\, then turn you loose to create a batch of your very own fermented goodness! We’ll supply the ingredients—you bring a sharp knife that’s large enough to cut a head of cabbage and a large cutting board. Also\, please bring your own vessel. This can be a wide mouth half-gallon mason jar or a half-gallon stoneware crock. Don’t have a Mason jar? No problem! Bring something glass that’s cylindrical in shape\, with a wide enough mouth that you can reach in to work on the kraut as it ferments.\n\nBecause she can’t help herself\, Katie will probably also share with you some interesting stories about sauerkraut and how it fits into Appalachian history and culture. She’ll answer questions and also share tips and tricks\, as well as ideas for using other veggies besides cabbage. Think beets\, corn\, radishes\, snow peas\, cucumbers\, and green beans. This delicious tour\, aptly named “Eats on Main Street” will include six stops along Jonesborough’s Main Street with food tastings at each one. The food will relate to the current businesses and businesses from the Town’s storied past. Learn about Jonesborough’s history with food\, step back in time and enjoy some fondue\, experience the legendary pimento cheese that Lavender’s Market used to sell\, and much more. The tour lasts approximately an hour. Tours are available at 1:00 pm\, 2:00 pm\, 3:00 pm\, and 4:00 pm. SUMMARY:10th Annual Constitution Week Bell Ringing
DESCRIPTION:On Sunday\, September 10th\, the State of Franklin Chapter of the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution (NSDAR)\,  is hosting its Tenth Annual Bell Ringing in honor of Constitution Week. The event will take place at 1:30 p.m. at Oak Hill School\, located at 214 East Sabin Drive in Jonesborough across from the Jonesborough Public Library. The program will focus on the history of the Thirteenth Amendment to the Constitution that reads\, “Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude\, except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted\, shall exist within the United States\, or any place subject to their jurisdiction.” \n  \nThe program will include music\, proclamations\, re-enactors\, and the history of enslavement and abolition in Jonesborough. Several heritage groups will be participating\, including the Kings Mountain NSSAR\, the Overmountain Victory Trail Association\, and participation from other local chapters of the NSDAR. \n  \nPlease bring your own chair and a bell to ring! Seating will not be provided on site. The Daughters of the American Revolution began the tradition of celebrating  to emphasize citizens’ responsibilities for protecting and defending the Constitution. In 1955\, the DAR petitioned Congress to set aside September 17-23 annually to be dedicated for the observance of Constitution Week.  The resolution was adopted by Congress and signed into law on August 2\, 1956\, by President Dwight D. Eisenhower.  The State of Franklin Chapter of the NSDAR has been based in Jonesborough since 1929.

SUMMARY:"Tunes\, Tales\, and Rails" Concert for Chuckey Depot Museum
DESCRIPTION:  \nAll aboard! The Chuckey Depot Museum and the Jonesborough Senior Center are bringing music\, tales\, and railroad history to Jonesborough’s newest park on Saturday\, September 9th. Several musical groups are coming together to share music and stories at Lincoln Park. Acts include the Jonesborough Golden Heirs Choir\, Jonesborough Senior Center\, and area soloists. The concert is directed by Cherry Smith. \nThe concert begins at 4:00 pm that afternoon and will last ninety minutes. The concert is free\, but donations are encouraged. All donations go to the educational programs and exhibits at the Chuckey Depot Museum. The museum is located on Second Avenue in a historic Southern Railroad depot that was moved from Chuckey\, TN\, to save it from demolition. Today\, the museum shares the history of the Chuckey community as well as the history of the Railroad in the region. The museum is free of charge so all donations to help with changing exhibits and programming is appreciated. \nSeating will be provided in the amphitheater courtesy of the Town of Jonesborough\, but you are also welcome to bring your own. Audience seating is not covered. Concessions will be provided by Paws in Blue.
