SUMMARY:History Happy Hour: Co-Education at Milligan University
DESCRIPTION:Join the Chester Inn State Historic Site and Museum on June 15th at 6:30 pm as we welcome Katherine N. Banks\, University Archivist & Information Resources Librarian at Milligan University for this month’s History Happy Hour! \n  \nMrs. Banks will be presenting on the history of co-education at Milligan University. According to Mrs. Banks\, “Milligan has always permitted men and women to study at the school from its beginning\, which was rather unusual for the late 1800s. My presentation will look at the reasons why Milligan allowed this and what the reality was for the students and faculty in its early years\, through the early 1900s. This presentation was developed from an exhibit and the accompanying research for the Holloway Archives at Milligan University. The title is ‘“No Distinction”’: Coeducation in Milligan’s Early Years\, 1881-1917.” The program will begin at 6:30 pm in the Chester Inn Museum’s Board Room. The program is free and open to the public! \n  \nThe 2023 season of History Happy Hour will run from April through November with a new program every third Thursday of the month. The full lineup includes Presidential history\, Jonesborough’s historic front porches\, deed research\, and much more. The full schedule is available on the Chester Inn’s Facebook page and the Heritage Alliance’s website. If you can’t attend History Happy Hour in person\, each program will be livestreamed to the Chester Inn Museum’s Facebook page. \n  \nThis project is funded under an agreement with the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation\, Tennessee Historical Commission. For more information on the Chester Inn Museum\, History Happy Hour\, or the Heritage Alliance please call our office at 423.753.9580 or the Chester Inn Museum at 423.753.4580.  You can also contact the organization via email at info@heritageall.org.  Additional information about the Heritage Alliance and its mission can be found online at http://www.heritageall.org/. SUMMARY:Picnicking with History
DESCRIPTION:Get close with local history on Saturday\, May 13th as the Heritage Alliance hosts its second annual “Picnicking with History” at the Knob Creek Historical Museum in Johnson City. Last year the picnic took us to Telford. This year\, we’re visiting one of Johnson City’s oldest communities. This event will include a tour of the historic grounds and buildings and a chance to have a picnic lunch on the lawn. Tickets include the tour\, admission to the museum\, and a boxed lunch from Main Street Café. \nPer the Knob Creek Historical Museum’s website\, “The Knob Creek Vineyards and Historical Area is located in the heart of Johnson City on acreage that has been owned by the Sherfey family since 1885. The site is a functioning farm and vineyard that has been in continual operation for over 200 years earning Knob Creek the designation of being a Century Farm by the state of Tennessee. In addition to the vineyards and farm at Knob Creek\, there is a two story museum on site\, as well as several historical structures including a log cabin\, caboose\, tobacco farm\, weaver’s cottage\, and historic dairy cellar. Some of the buildings\, such as the Duncan Cabin\, have been well preserved on the site and are available for tours.” \nThe site was home to George and Margaret Holley. They were instrumental in preserving local history\, especially the history of the Knob Creek Community. They started the museum and today their daughter Deanna Carey cares for the collection of thousands of artifacts. Please note that these are historic buildings and they include stairs\, uneven ground\, and tight spaces. Good walking shoes are required for this event.  “This is the perfect event for Mother’s Day weekend\,” says Heritage Alliance Executive Director Anne Mason. “Bring mom out for a lovely picnic and some fascinating history.” This event will also be a chance to see the Knob Creek Museum before it opens for its 2023 season. \nThere are four tour and lunch slots available on May 13th at 11:30 pm\, 1:00 pm\, 2:30 pm\, and 4:00 pm. There are only 20 tickets available per slot\, so make sure you book your tickets fast. The cost is $30.00 per person. This event is a unique fundraiser for the educational programs of the Heritage Alliance and the Knob Creek Historical Museum. You can purchase tickets online through the Town of Jonesborough’s ticketing system at Jonesborough.com/tickets. You can also call the Visitor’s Center at 423.753.1010. \nThe Knob Creek Historical Museum is located at 243 Denny Mill Road. You can learn more about them by visiting their website at http://www.experienceknobcreek.com. The Heritage Alliance is dedicated to the preservation of the architectural\, historical\, and cultural heritage of our region and to providing educational experiences related to history and heritage for a wide range of audiences. SUMMARY:History Happy Hour: ”I've Endured: Women in Old-Time Music”
DESCRIPTION:Join the Chester Inn State Historic Site and Museum on April 20th at 6:30 pm as we welcome Dr. Rene Rodgers and Erika Baker from the Birthplace of Country Music Museum as they kick off the 2023 season of History Happy Hour! \n  \nThe Birthplace of Country Music Museum is no stranger to History Happy Hour\, and this time they will be sharing about their brand new exhibit “I’ve Endured: Women in Old-Time Music.” This exhibit was years in the making.  Dr. Rodgers explains\, “Old-time music is described and experienced in different ways and for different purposes\, but at its heart\, old-time is mountain folk music with strong ties to Appalachia and the diverse peoples who have called it home. Women have always been central to old-time music — in the home and on the stage\, and as instrumentalists and singers\, preservationists\, activists\, promoters\, and cultural memory keepers. Join the Birthplace of Country Music Museum staff as they introduce their new special exhibit and explore the stories of the women who have been integral to old-time music.” The program will begin at 6:30 pm in the Chester Inn Museum’s Board Room.

SUMMARY:Homeschool Day at Oak Hill School - FULL
DESCRIPTION:ALL OF OUR DATES FOR SPRING 2023 ARE FULL. You are welcome to add your name to the waiting list.\n  \nThe Heritage Alliance is excited to offer four homeschool days this spring at the historic Oak Hill School. The award winning Oak Hill School Heritage Education program is the only experiential learning program of its type in this region\, and homeschool students are encouraged to come and experience history with the Heritage Alliance in Tennessee’s Oldest Town.  The dates for this experience are April 17th and 18th and May 1st and 2nd. \n  \nOak Hill School was built in 1886 to serve the community of Knob Creek. The building served local residents until it was closed in the 1950s. The school building was moved the seven miles from Knob Creek to Jonesborough and placed in its current location behind the Visitors Center. Today\, Oak Hill School invites students to come for a day-long experience and enroll in school in 1893. Reading\, writing\, arithmetic\, history\, geography – even the pledge of allegiance – are all as they were prior to the turn of the last century. \n  \nSchool will last from 9:00am – 2:00pm on April 17th\, 18th\, and May 1st\, and 2nd. This program is limited to 26 students\, grades 1st – 12th\, so sign up now! \n  \nRegistration information is available at https://www.heritageall.org/education/programs/oak-hill-school/.
