SUMMARY:Virtual History Happy Hour: The "Lost Class" of Langston High School
DESCRIPTION:The sixth season of History Happy Hour kicks off on Thursday\, March 10th at 6:30 pm. \n  \nJoin us as we welcome Mr. Charles D. Crowe\, a student from Langston High School and a graduate of Science Hill High School. Mr. Crowe will speak about his time at Langston and his perspective on being the “Lost Class of 1965” – a name given to those students who were high school juniors when school integration occurred. Mr. Crowe served as Director of Procurements and Contracts for the Department of Energy. This program will take place online via the Zoom platform. It will also be livestreamed to the Chester Inn Museum’s Facebook page. The Zoom link is available on the Heritage Alliance’s website and on the Chester Inn Facebook page. \n  \nThe Langston Centre was built in 1893 as the Langston Normal School. A 1925 renovation\, made possible by Rosenwald funding\, added a gymnasium to the school.  Named after Virginia congressional representative John Mercer Langston\, it served as a school for African American students from 1893 to 1965. The Langston Education and Arts Development organization worked with the community and other groups to help restore Langston as a functioning community center for arts and education. Today\, the Langston Centre offers a variety of classes and programs. They most recently launched the Langston Experience in February. \n  \n“We’re excited to welcome Mr. Crowe and share more stories from Langston\,” says Heritage Alliance Executive Director Anne Mason. “They are such an important part of the community\, and their students have so many stories to share.” The program will start at 6:30 pm on March 10th. It is free to the public. \n  \nStarting in April\, History Happy Hour will be the third Thursday of every month at 6:30 pm. Topics for this season include Shaker Dance\, “Edison and the Origins of Recorded Sound\,” traditional\, wooden spoon making\, historic bricks in architecture\, and much more. A full line up for the season will soon be available at the Heritage Alliance’s website\, heritageall.org\, and on the Chester Inn Museum’s Facebook page. History Happy Hour provides a space for the community to gather and engage with a variety of topics. Over its six seasons\, the program has established a platform to showcase the many regional organizations that are engaged in historical work and research. \n  \nThis project is funded under an agreement with the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation\, Tennessee Historical Commission. \n  \nZoom Information: \nJoin Zoom Meeting\nhttps://us02web.zoom.us/j/89719746424?pwd=QW9wbmtuZ3FBMGN5VGVnMjJPRjVTdz09 \nMeeting ID: 897 1974 6424\nPasscode: 990503 \nOne tap mobile\n+16465588656\,\,89719746424#\,\,\,\,*990503# US (New York)\n+13017158592\,\,89719746424#\,\,\,\,*990503# US (Washington DC) \nDial by your location\n+1 646 558 8656 US (New York)\n+1 301 715 8592 US (Washington DC)\n+1 312 626 6799 US (Chicago)\n+1 669 900 9128 US (San Jose)\n+1 253 215 8782 US (Tacoma)\n+1 346 248 7799 US (Houston)\nMeeting ID: 897 1974 6424\nPasscode: 990503\nFind your local number: https://us02web.zoom.us/u/kdFGGeRuUk

SUMMARY:Nancy at Washington College Academy
DESCRIPTION:– In 1820\, Elihu Embree published his newspaper The Emancipator on Main Street\, Jonesborough. The seven edition paper is the first publication dedicated solely to the cause of abolitionism. Embree passed away in December of 1820\, and the paper died with him. Even though it was short-lived\, The Emancipator had over 2\,000 subscribers and its reach went all the way to Boston and Philadelphia. In spite of his abolitionist beliefs\, Embree himself was an enslaver. Nancy was an enslaved woman owned by Elihu Embree\, and her story will be shared at Washington College Academy on November 13th in an original play entitled “Nancy.” \n  \nWritten by Anne G’Fellers-Mason\, Executive Director of the Heritage Alliance\, “Nancy” follows a year in the woman’s life\, from January 1820 when Elihu Embree wrote his will to January 1821 when his will was read before the Washington County court. In his will\, Embree tried to free Nancy and her five children\, but were his wishes carried out? What was Nancy feeling and thinking during this time? The play is based on primary research relying heavily on documents from the Washington County Archives. The role of Nancy will be performed by local actress Ubunibi-Afia Short. “Nancy” premiered on June 19th at the Embree House Historic Farm to three\, sold out audiences. \n  \n“It is an honor to bring the show to Washington College Academy\, the oldest college in the state\,” Mason says. “We are very excited to partner with them.” The performance at 6:00 pm on November 13th will be a fundraiser for the Washington College Academy Alumni and the Heritage Alliance. The show will be performed in the historic Girls’ Dormitory on the campus. Tickets are $20.00 and can be purchased directly through Washington College Academy by calling 423-257-5151 or by emailing their office at washingtoncollegeacademy@gmail.com.  Seating is limited to only 50 people\, so make sure you purchase your tickets in advance. Tickets can also be purchased by visiting Washington College Academy’s website at www.wca1780.com. \n  \nThe Heritage Alliance is dedicated to the preservation of the architectural\, historical\, and cultural heritage of our region and to providing educational experiences related to history and heritage for a wide range of audiences. For more information\, visit our website at heritageall.org or call our office at 423-753-9580. \n  \nWashington College Academy is now home to the Washington College Academy School of Arts and Crafts. It is becoming known as a center for the arts where the forms of artistic talents are as diverse as the mountain leaves. It is a diverse heritage that draws students and friends to campus. Washington College is on the National Register of Historic Places. Take a class at Washington College Academy School of Arts and Crafts and be a part of their ongoing history.
