Parents may have to wait outside or take turns watching the instruction. Instructor Heather Gilreath will lead students through the process. Payment of $12.00 is required upon registration. All supplies are included. The Exchange Place is located at 4812 Orebank Rd, Kingsport, TN 37664.
Perhaps no food is more associated with early America than the humble hoecake. This historic “fast food” fed both rich and poor, enslaved and elite. Join us for an interactive and engaging presentation at Exchange Place Historic Site to learn more about hoecakes and other fare of the antebellum Mountain South. In the reconstructed log kitchen, you will see first-hand how food was prepared over an open fire in the days before electricity and indoor plumbing. Especially curious students may even make their own hoecakes!
